He served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the People's Liberation Army and Commander of the Air Force. During the "Cultural Revolution", he actively participated in Lin Biao's conspiracy to usurp the supreme power of the party and the state. In 1973, he was expelled from the party and all his positions within and outside the party were revoked. His military rank must have been cancelled, so Wu Faxian was no longer a general.
