A 23-year-old college student joined the "Farmer Protection Team" to hunt wild boars during the wint

In the early morning of January 14, 23-year-old junior Xiao Ran was electrocuted to death by a privately set up electric trap in Jiangxia District, Wuhan, Hubei. Relatives said that Xiao Ran was doing farmer protection work with the Liangzi Lake Scenic Area Farmers Protection Team during the winter vacation.

Six days have passed since the incident. On January 20, Xiao Ran’s relatives told the Huashang Daily Dafeng News reporter that the police have opened a case for investigation, but have not yet found the suspect who set up the private power grid.

According to relatives, Xiao Ran lives in Enshi, Hubei Province. He is 23 years old and a junior at a normal college in Wuhan. He is the only son in the family.

On January 20, Xiao Ran's cousin told the Huashang Daily Dafeng News reporter that around December 30, 2024, after the school had its winter vacation, Xiao Ran joined Shi's "farmer protection team" in the Liangzi Lake Scenic Area.

Xiao Ran's grandfather said: "They are a team to protect farmers. Shi called him (Xiao Ran) and he also lives in Shi's house. Shi is also a college student, but they are not students of the same school."

According to Xiao Ran’s cousin, “At about 2 a.m. on January 14 this year, Xiao Ran was electrocuted by a privately installed electric grid in Caiwang Village, Binhu Subdistrict. He was sent to the hospital for treatment but died at about 4 a.m. The person who installed the electric grid has not been found yet.”

Xiao Ran's cousin said: "According to Shi, the seven of them were together at the time, and they were hunting wild boars."

The reporter learned from an insider that because wild boars were causing harm to the local area, someone organized a team to protect farmers.

Xiao Ran's grandfather told reporters that after the incident, their relatives did not know about it. "It was the local police station that called to inform the family, and then the family came to Liangzi Lake Scenic Area. The police took us to see the body and asked us to find the Liangzi Lake Scenic Area Management Committee."

"The scenic spot said that the place where the accident happened was not within the scope of the scenic spot." Xiao Ran's cousin explained that it was a farmer protection team organized by Shi on behalf of the Liangzi Lake Scenic Area Management Committee.

"He couldn't handle it alone, so he called them together. Shi is also a college student. The scenic spot told us that they were doing charity work. The scenic spot gave him a letter of authorization, saying that the problem had nothing to do with the scenic spot."

Xiao Ran's grandfather said that the local farmer protection team consists of seven people in total. "It is difficult for us to confirm who organized it. Xiao Ran was working during the winter vacation and was not paid. How could he stay there?"

Six days have passed since the incident, and Xiao Ran's body is still in the funeral home. His family has received the police's notice of filing a case, hoping to give an explanation to the deceased.

Xiao Ran's cousin said that the Chinese New Year was coming soon, and Xiao Ran's sudden misfortune was hard for the family to accept. "The police said they were investigating the case and were trying to catch the person who installed the power grid. Currently, the police criminal investigation brigade is taking the lead in coordinating the case. The police station did not give us Shi's phone number and said that they would have to wait until the case was solved before giving us relatives an explanation."

Public information shows that Liangzi Lake Scenic Area is located in Wuhan and Ezhou, Hubei Province, of which the Jiangxia area of Wuhan accounts for more than two-thirds, and Ezhou and Xianning account for the rest.

On the afternoon of January 20, a reporter from Huashang Daily Dafeng News contacted the Binhu Police Station of the Wuhan Public Security Bureau's Donghu New Technology Development Zone Branch. The police replied: "The case has been handed over to the branch. If you have any questions, you can ask the political department of our branch. We cannot disclose the case to the public."

The reporter contacted the Liangzi Lake Scenic Area Management Committee of Jiangxia District, Wuhan City, and the staff said: "His surname is Ran, so let me ask, we are in Jiangxia District, and the Binhu Police Station is in Donghu High-tech Zone."

The staff admitted that there were many wild boars in the area. "We asked outside professionals to help hunt wild boars on an island. We have never formed a (farmer protection team) ourselves. Caiwang Village is not within the jurisdiction of our scenic area. It belongs to the East Lake High-tech Zone. The two are not the same place."

The staff member then said: "I'd better ask before I can answer this question."
